The Breiðafjörður Boat Museum at Reykhólar was founded in 2006 by people who are interested in boats and building boats. The traditional wooden klink boat is and will be the main focus of the museum, where the history of the klink boat in Breiðafjörður and other parts of Iceland will be presented.
Klink boats were built in several different shapes depending on what each boat was going to be used for, for example for fishing, transporting people, hey or domestic animals. The museum will show how klink boats are built, from keel to bulwarks, the oars, mast, boat wheel, the blacksmith work, how the sails are sewed and how the boats sail at sea.
Sea routes and navigational points on land will be presented, as well as the location of the best fishing areas and the seasonal routes of fish.
The main purpose of the museum will be to preserve old boats and display them in the museum. The aim is also to perserve the knowledge of how these boats are built, by offering courses and to collaborate with schools and youth associations around the country to inform and teach.
