Skriðuklaustur in Fljótsdalur valley is a center of culture and history. The Institute of Gunnar Gunnarsson runs a museum about the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson in his former home. The house was built in 1939 and is one of Iceland’s most valuable buildings, donated to the icelandic nation in 1948. Near by are the ruins of a 16th century augustinian cloister which was excavated in the years 2000-2012. On site is exhibition about the research and the ruins are accessable all year round. At Skriðuklaustur there are as well exhibitions and events of various kind concerning local heritage.
