theistareykir-volcano

Activity has been low in the Þeistareykir volcanic system since early Holocene. The last eruption took place about 2400 years ago. Located in the Northern Volcanic Zone it is the northernmost on-land volcanic system in Iceland. It is about 80 km long and up to15 km wide. There is no glacial cover but a potential seaward extension. Holocene volcanism is restricted to effusive eruptions from central vents forming lava shields. Eruption of small shields about 12-15,000 years ago was followed by formation of large shields around 10-12,000 years ago, with volumes up to 30 km3.
